The Nikon Z 70-180mm f/2.8 is a smaller and less expensive alternative to the premium Nikon Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, and as such, should be one of the best Nikon Z-mount lenses for subjects such as portraits and events. Meanwhile, the latter is a long-range yet still reasonably portable zoom for sports, aviation, and wildlife photography.
I am buying this zoom for close ups, primarily, and also for its focal range at much less weight than the 70-200 f2.8. It's many years since Nikon released the award winning 70-180 AFD Micro-Nikkor, which does not AF on Z cameras. The design and mtf speak for themselves. And it will pair with a Teleconverter

I know the 70-200 is obviously much heavier, but I'm wondering (aside from weight, and the fact that the 85mm opens up to f/1.8 vs 2.8 on my 70-200) if it's worth buying or if I should just shoot my 70-200 at 85mm for portraits?
