Everyone can meet immediately from anywhere by hitting P and going into the PvP Lobby (must finish basic tutorial first, of course). From there you can go to Lion's Arch through a portal straight ahead and a little to your left. Lion's Arch is the central port city in the middle of Tyria, where all races and players meet to conduct business.
An Asura, a silvari, a norn, a char and a human walks in a bar. The Asura is too short to order. The Char is denied service cause he purrs. The norn went into a brawl. The human fell in love with the princess and the silvari missed the salad bar. But none danced with abaddon and got served!
One of my friends stopped playing his charr because he couldn't find an armor set that made him satisfied with how he looked. That's a pretty vain reason to drop a character, but it's still a reason nonetheless, and an important enough desire for him. Everyone has different reasons for liking and playing their characters.

There are portals in the capital cities that get you to the other races capitals (and to the PvP areas). These are right next to where you zone in after completing the introductory mission.
